Stephen Hawkings is known for having said “My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all”.
We can identify few things here:
my goal is = there is a goal of some sort
complete understanding = there is a possibility to completely understand something
universe = there is something called universe and that is what is being understood
why it is as it is = there is a state which can be described entirely
it exists = that it (universe) really exists
Basically what is happening here, is that in one sentence the relative and the ultimate are being mixed. This would not work. Universe will always be a demarcation which is subject to all kinds of relativity. This is equally true for all demarcations (words).
Also there is the question of “why” which implies that there has to be a reason for things at the ultimate level, one that somehow sits with our intellect. This is the very ground where theistic theories break down.
One believes in god that created everything and the other believes in another form of miraculous creation (big bang).
