As a community-led initiative curated by botlab.io, we are today announcing Adtech Wall of Facepalm in response to the ignorance and corruption in the internet advertising industry, largely perpetuated through comments made in the media and claims made in “research” papers. So far it has been possible to make almost any comment or any claim, without concern for consequences.
The list is based on submission from community, and while we have an active network of leading independent internet researchers as contributors, anyone can make a submission for review. If a submission is disputed once posted, it will be reviewed by an ethical council consisting of the before mentioned independent researchers. Names of the council members are not disclosed to remove change of “recruitment” and other forms of corruption targeting the council members and the integrity of the list.

why is the list important
It is the only “name and shame” solution for effectively reducing malpractice and misconduct among advertising technology companies. It’s also important because the updated list is frequently sent to key decision makers in major agency holding groups, major advertisers, and perhaps most importantly, advertiser trade bodies. If you end up on the list, the chances are that the key buyers in you key markets will hear about it. If you fail to remedy and remain on the list, they will keep hearing about it on-going.
how does the list work
This is a community-led initiative where anyone can suggest an inclusion based on ignorant comments, corrupt practices or other gross misconduct on behalf of an advertising technology company or an individual working in the industry.
INDIVIDUALS: If you work in adtech and say or do something that shows substantially shows your ignorance and/or corruption, the chances are that you’ll end up on the list. If you are founder or c-level, your company gets on the list with you.
COMPANIES: Exactly like it’s with individuals; once you’ve made it on the list, the way to get out is to remedy the flagged issue. Basically you have to improve.
how to get out of the list
By correcting the mistake that you had made. If it’s about corrupt practices, you have to show you’re not doing it anymore. If it’s about ignorance, in most cases you simply have to change your comments to reflect facts.
